congratulates The Transport Safety Network Group
The Australian Logistics Council (ALC) would like to congratulate the Transport Safety Network Group, consisting of BlueScope Steel, OneSteel and Smorgon Steel, and to commend their recent work in addressing the current road safety risk challenges faced by the industry. This project stemmed from concern raised by the National Transport Commission (NTC) and State Governments for a need to improve their contribution to road safety.
“Steel companies are significant road freight users. This is a great example of different companies combining on an industry basis to proactively improve safety and combat ever-increasing road risk challenges,” Ingilby Dickson
The Australian Steel Industry “Chain of Responsibility” Code of Practice developed by the Group has seen the prescription of minimum and preferred Chain of Responsibility behaviours. Key areas of responsibility have targeted load restraint, vehicle load mass and dimension, and driver fatigue. Through the Code, the Group seeks to further promote awareness and training, develop guidelines and audit capability, and enhance existing management systems.
“In developing this Code, the Group has recognized our industry’s responsibility across the transport supply chain. Our Companies share a common pursuit of zero harm within the steel industry and a desire to demonstrate good corporate governance and citizenship as we positively adapt to evolving legislation,” said Andrew Bray, Smorgon Steel General Manager Supply Chain.
The Steel Industry Code of Practice, which complies with the NTC’s guidelines, specifically endeavours to engage industry participants throughout the entire transport supply chain with the adoption of measures that mitigate heavy-vehicle road accidents and infrastructure damage.
“In implementing the Code, BlueScope Steel, OneSteel and Smorgon Steel have collaborated to build upon the excellent hazard identification and risk reduction work that has already been achieved in the road transport of steel products,” Don Gartsky, General Manager Logistics OneSteel Market Mills said.
BlueScope Steel is an active Member of the Australian Logistics Council (ALC) and has participated in the development of the “Retail Logistics Supply Chain Code of Conduct” which has seen several major grocery retailers, and their transport providers’ work together to address similar issues raised by the NTC.
