OCTOBER 2006
Executive Director’s Update
A major focus of activity in October/ November has been the finalisation of the Code of Conduct for Retail Logistics and the very successful ALC Council meeting in Perth. The Retail Code has now been signed and launched at an Industry Reception in Melbourne. It is a major commitment from key ALC members to making sure solid standards of safety and operations are set and maintained throughout the supply chain. These arrangements are likely to provide a great basis for development of similar code in other areas of logistics.
The Perth ALC meeting was officially opened by the WA leader of the Opposition, Hon Paul Omodei and ran together with the WA Supply Chain Conference. Major areas of focus of our meeting included plans and priorities for 2007-2010, setting priorities in responding to the COAG agenda for building capability, and the launch of the National T&L Brand.
In the lead up to the Perth meeting the Data Group and the Careers Group met and hit important milestones. The Futures Working Group also met with Dr Gary Saliba for the first time and has started the important task of improving our understanding of the future so that better decisions can be made today. Working Group members are working on data collection and on a small number of targeted interviews.
We also provided a detailed briefing to the new Federal Transport Minister Mark Vaile and have met with his senior staff. We look forward to working closely with him and his advisors as we have done with previous Ministers.
Finally, the process of reviewing the Australian Logistics Industry Strategy (ALIS) started. This national strategy was the origin of ALC and ALC has had responsibility in large part for its implementation. I am on the Steering Committee and early findings indicate strong government and industry support for the strategy and for the contributions that we and others have made to its implementation. Written submissions are being sought by Mr John Bowdler who is conducting the review. The draft report is due on 1 December 2006.
